Virginias, better known as spider mutants or denmothers, can be found deep in the cave systems and extremely rarely above ground, although they will come out if the player significantly raises hostility with the cannibals.

The Spider Mutant will not be able to detect the player if crouched, but if the Spider Mutant detects the player, it will lift its front legs and charge in the player's direction. It may take 1 or 2 hits to kill an unarmored player.

There are two versions of this mutant: the common skin-colored version and the rare blue version.

Appearance and Behavior

Like the octopus mutant, it appears to be formed by two (possibly three) bodies that are struggling and writhing against each other. The spider mutant has 6 legs, claw-like feet, breasts, and 6 malformed arms (four of which appears to have been split in half). The spider mutant is also the only mutant with visible genitalia, as the vulva of the front female body appears to be extended along the underside to connect to the vulva of the rear female body. The spider mutant has no facial features. However, the front side of the spider mutant appears to be the side with the two least malformed arms with functional hands.

The spider mutant makes skittering noises like a bug or a scorpion, so it is sometimes possible to hear them before they are seen; however, she is much quieter in comparison to the Armsy or Cowman.

Story

Like Armsy, Virginia is suggested to have been created by Sahara, using the Resurrection Obelisk, resulting in her mutations.

In the Orientation Slideshow, Virginia is called "Subject 37B5", and her age being twelve at the time of her mutations. The slideshow states that she developed multiple sex organs, which explains her ability to produce Mutant Babies. Similar to Armsy, she developed face distortions, and her multiple limbs may have been a result of sibling rivalry. Judging by some drawings and pictures taking her as subject, Virginia was on the peninsula for a long time, maybe even before Sahara bought the peninsula as well.

Cave Combat

Virginia is the easiest of the three large mutants to attack in caves, as confined spaces are as bad for her as they are for you. 4-5 molotovs are generally sufficient to kill a Virginia, and confined spaces generally prevent her from leaping. Burning ranged weapons are highly recommended, such as fire arrows, molotovs, and the flare gun. Lighting her on fire allows for constant visual contact of Virginia in caves. This allows you to more easily dodge any leaping attacks that may happen, and allow you to continue to light her on fire until dead.

In co-op, having one player with a club defending the attacks while two more use flaming arrows or well-aimed molotovs on a flank is the fastest and safest way to kill a Virginia. Most Virginias also contain a posse of cannibals or mutant babies with them, so having exact timing with molotovs is highly recommended.

Surface Combat

If your base has been located by the cannibals, and you have killed many of them, along with having many effigies built by them around your base, Virginia and other mutants are more likely to attack your base. If tensions escalate significantly between mutants and the player (bigger and bigger groups being killed), then they eventually send a Virginia to attack, usually alone at first. However, as the death toll mounts, packs of mutants of 3 to 5 members will start appearing, with up to 3 Virginias per pack. Sometimes, it will not locate/sense you and will instead start attacking player-created structures. However, it will still interrupt sleep when it arrives. If it attacks your base, it will hit the structures repeatedly until destroyed. It is best to leave your base if/when a Virginia appears at your base. It may seem counter-intuitive, but it is best to draw it away as it will topple all of your hard work until it can reach you; it is an unpredictable enemy. Recent versions have allowed the AI to attack trees in order to topple tree houses, making them unfortunate hiding places after Virginia has engaged.

Fighting Virginia on the surface is similar to in caves, however open spaces allow her to leap and charge far more consistently. Virginia can leap as high as the cannibal huts are, making her a formidable opponent. As with all mutants, ranged fire weapons are most effective in both damaging Virginia and protecting the player's health. Fire arrows, explosives, and molotovs are suggested. About 4-5 molotovs usually kills Virginia. The attack range on the spears exceeds that of Virginia, and the lack of fatigue cost affords great mobility and kiting potentials; however, her random charges can and will quickly overcome the spear, slamming straight into the player. As she is usually always accompanied by mutant babies and/or cannibals, it is highly recommended to dispose of the followers first to avoid getting flanked.

She is almost certainly a 'queen bee', as on the surface she is almost always found with mutant babies nearby.

Blue Virginia

Very rarely, a blue skinned Virginia may be encountered. They have more health and are both stronger and faster. The player is advised to take extra caution with blue Virginias. VirginiaGreyFarket
