VR was introduced into The Forest in the VR Beta update which was released on May 22nd, 2018.

Gameplay[]

  • In the inventory, the crafting gear is in front of you, when looking up from the main area
  • In the Inventory, everything is set on freestanding cardboard boxes
  • In multiplayer, when you are on a raft and someone is moving it, the inventory will stay put while the player moves, and will make it almost impossible to select the correct item.
  • Weapons and Axes have no cooldown to strike, making high damage weapons extremely viable.
  • With either spear, hold your right trigger and make a throwing motion, and let go to throw.
  • It is common to accidentally throw a spear, and (from personal experience) it does not matter how far your controller moves, but its speed and direction matter.
  • All stats are on the watch, or in your book
  • Underwater, you have to get your watch very close to your face for it to become legible.
  • Non-VR players can damage VR players, and Vice-Versa
  • Molotov and dynamite have major problems throwing, and do not carry much momentum as compared to the spear
  • Different loading screen: cave is deeper, and entrance is not visible, a deeper section of the cave is behind you, in front of you is a small lit area, a corpse of unidentifiable gender hanging upside down, a pile of skulls, and a bunch of bones laying against rock.
  • Uncommon bug: sleeping will not black out your screen: you can see the time pass.
  • When sleeping, your screen simply blackens instead of having a sleeping symbol.
  • When drinking from a water collector, you will not be stopped even when your thirst is full
  • All unfinished building requirements show up on your non-dominant hand
  • Status effects appear on the watch of the non-dominant hand
  • You will not gain Strength stat in VR, however, you can gain Athleticism in VR
  • There is no known way to use Console Commands while in VR
  • What you grab is often dependent on your headset orientation and position, as well as the hand position in certain cases.
  • Oxygen for the rebreather is shown on your watch, which appears on your non-dominant controllers wrist.
  • Lighting a Upgraded Stick with cloth on it is difficult, it must be lit from the bottommost part of the cloth
  • If your headset gets close enough to the ground, it stops crouching and moves the ground away from you.
  • Due to the way that the Lighter works, it is impossible to light Fire Arrow. Attempts to have another player light your arrow have failed thus far.
  • Movement (possibly visual) glitch: opening your inventory while on an uneven surface, that of which one you would slide down by standing on, to the point where you are able to see under the boxes, then closing your inventory, will teleport you to the point at which you opened your inventory.
  • VR players cannot read text chat in multiplayer.
  • Due to your lack of arms you cannot see your own Outfits, apart from the shadow, making outfits pointless in singleplayer.
  • Feather Upgrades provide little-to-no positive benefit.

Controls[]

Oculus Controls:

  • Movement - Left Thumbstick
  • Direction - right and left on the right thumbstick
  • Running - Click the left thumbstick while moving
  • Crouching - Click in right thumbstick OR enable real life movement
  • Jumping - press up on the right thumbstick
  • Dropping - hold down on the right thumbstick
  • Pick up items - grip on right controller
  • Lighter - Grip on left controller - trigger to light
  • Survival guide - "A" button on right controller
  • Inventory - press "X" on left controller
  • Hit - Hit with the weapon physically
  • Block - ???
  • Slide (Turtle Shell) - Jump + Right trigger *requires verification*
  • Use - right bottom grip
  • Light - Light it with lighter in left hand (NOTE: YOU CAN GET LIT ON FIRE VERY EASILY IN VR, BEWARE)
  • Throw - Hold trigger, make throwing motion, release.
  • Backpack hotkeys - hold your inventory key, and a backpack will appear in your hand, whatever you put in your backpack will be on there, and you can use/equip from there.

HTC Vive Controls:

  • Movement - Touch a direction on left thumbpad
  • Turning - Press left or right on the right thumbpad
  • Running - Press in a direction on the left thumbpad
  • Crouching - Press in center of right thumbpad (sometimes unequips held item, unsure of why)
  • Jumping - Press up on right thumbpad
  • Pick up items - grip on right controller
  • Lighter - Grip on left controller - trigger to light
  • Survival Guide - Menu button on right controller
  • Inventory - Menu button on the right controller
  • Hit - Hit with the weapon physically
  • Use - Grip
  • Backpack hotkeys - hold your inventory key, and a backpack will appear in your hand, whatever you put in your backpack will be on there, and you can use/equip from there.
