The flashlight is a light source, material item that was added in update v0.01 of The Forest. It was made much brighter and has a better 3d model as of v0.63, it was changed from a plastic torch to a tactical flashlight. It can be found in Cave 5 - Submerged Cave.
Gameplay[]
The flashlight emits a bright source of light when turned on, and it lasts for about 10 minutes. Unlike the lighter, its beam of light is brighter, cool white, and faces only the direction in which it is pointed. As the charge runs down the color shifts to warm white and begins to dim. The player will occasionally shake the flashlight when the batteries drop below 20%, it begins to flicker at 15%, and it's brightness decreases significantly below 10%. When the batteries run out of charge, the light completely dims out over the space of several seconds. If the tactical flashlight gets blood on it while fighting an enemy, its beam will become red and its brightness significantly increases, illuminating a wider area. To achieve this in the fastest way, fight an enemy with the chainsaw while holding it with your other hand similar to the lighter, shining the light at the enemy. This is risky because you can also get covered in blood, allowing infection. The effect disappears when you enter water or in rain, to avoid this, equip the lighter when you go for a swim then re-equip it when you want to use it again. Possibly while this effect is active, mutants may flee when the light is shined on them, like how they react to the color red.
When the batteries are depleted, they will need to be replaced. Batteries can also be obtained in caves, and by right clicking on them in the inventory, the tactical flashlight can be recharged. At some point this was changed and batteries must be crafted into the flashlight to recharge it. You automatically get batteries by trying to pick-up extra flashlights.
As of v0.71, a flashlight can be attached to specific weapons to provide light while using those weapons. It can be removed by placing the weapon on the crafting mat and pressing C
over the weapon. The batteries charge is still the same and will require batteries to recharge it. If a player finds a spare flashlight, they can add their original one to a weapon, then pick up the new flashlight.
