The drying rack is a meat storage and drying building that was added in update v0.08 of The Forest. It can be found under the food section of the survival guide.


It is used to make raw meat edible, as well as store multiple pieces of meat. Raw meat will become "dried" after 8 minutes and 20 seconds. The process cannot be influenced by the player such as building a roof or a floor on top, or by placing fire below the drying rack. The time of the day and the weather won´t affect the drying. If the meat is removed beforehand, it resets the timer. All large meat items, including cannibal body parts, are able to be placed and dried. The meat appears to never expire, though it will go black after a prolonged stay on the drying rack. It can hold 7 items of meat at a time.

The drying rack can be built on rafts, large rafts, and houseboats

Noteworthy, cannibals, particularly the skinny variants, can steal and eat hung meat from drying racks before potentially attacking it. Thus, it is best to put drying racks within buildings and away from enemies.





Known Bugs[]

  • Meat can turn black, and provides the benefits of burned meat if eaten off the rack. However, once collected it will revert back to its original quality.
  • Multiplayer: It sometimes occurs that meat won´t dry and spoil. It is unclear what causes this bug.
  • Multiplayer: Sometimes when spamming different meats from generic to fish drying rack may appear to stack meat and fish in same slot, but it is just a visual bug.-nox 5/29/18
  • Attempting to give dried meat to a teammate with the metal tin will revert its dried status.

Replaced drying rack with a “lite”, single row version. Costs 5 sticks. This version should alleviate the targeting issues last version of the drying rack had. (This update is not retroactive; previously made racks will still be the old version.)
